From Shelter to Financial Security: How Property Investment Meets Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Leads to a Better Future
At IGrow Wealth Investments, our team believes that there is more to property investment than mere financial gain. Embarking on a property investment journey can lead you to security, freedom, and a sense of purpose. If you are a tenant or an investor, the homes we sell, rent, and manage cater to basic human needs. Property investment fulfils the basic need of shelter and builds right up to self-actualisation or self-fulfilment.

A breakdown of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
This conceptualisation of the different levels of human needs as motivational forces, ordered from most essential, at the foundation, to least essential, was created by motivational psychologist Abraham Maslow in the 20th Century. It has been used in various forms and adaptations ever since to explain human needs in ascending levels of a pyramid. For illustrative purposes, we have used a simple 6-level version of the hierarchy model.
The base level starts with what you need to survive (and so are highly motivated to seek out because you can’t ignore these elements). The top level is about reaching self-fulfilment, which is when you have everything you need to survive and feel safe and thrive, and have the capacity to reach higher.
There are various versions of it that have been created over the years, with subtly different emphasis. We are using one provided in a recently published psychology research source.
As you can see. IGrow properties can impact lives from the ground up, and our IGrow team can help you meet some of these critical needs as you embark on your journey to wealth creation and well-being.
The Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs refers to the following levels:
- Physiological Needs: Air, water, food, shelter, clothing
- Safety: Personal security, employment, resources, health, property
- Love and Belonging: Friendship, family, sense of connection, intimacy
- Esteem: Respect, self-esteem, status, recognition, strength, freedom
- Self-Actualisation: Desire to become the best that you can be

1. Physiological Needs: Air, Water, Food, Shelter, Clothing
“According to Maslow, human needs were arranged in a hierarchy, with physiological (survival) needs at the bottom, and the more creative and intellectually oriented ‘self-actualisation’ needs at the top.
Maslow argued that basic physical survival needs must be satisfied before the individual can focus on satisfying the higher needs.” (Source)
For example, if you don’t have access to shelter, you won’t be able to reach the higher levels of human needs. For a tenant, living in a clean, well-maintained property gives them the fulfilment of shelter, warmth, protection and a place to rest.
IGrow properties are chosen by our rental agents to provide modern, safe and comfortable housing, close to shopping centres where they can buy their groceries, medicines, etc. and get to work to earn a living, offering tenants convenience, accessibility, and comfort. These tend to be perennially successful properties because they ensure people can afford good homes where they will be able to fulfil their basic needs with ease.
As an investor, owning your own income-generating IGrow properties provides you with a passive rental income stream (every month). This supports your basic needs of being able to fund your essential living expenses. Each month your passive rental income paid into your bank account is another step forward, towards financial freedom.
In partnering with IGrow Wealth Investments, your first property investment can begin meeting your most basic human needs. This also applies to your tenants, meeting their needs, who call your property their home.
2. Safety: Personal Security, Employment, Resources, Health, Property
Safety is all about peace of mind. Homes play a critical role in this. When looking at meeting tenants’ needs, IGrow properties are in safe, well-maintained and run suburbs, within complexes with secure access. A safe place to call home fosters mental well-being.
Many of our investment complexes offer on-property gyms or private gyms a short drive away that tenants can access, or access to green areas or beaches, helping your tenants maintain their physical health through great lifestyle options.
When looking at investors, safety is provided via the guidance of our team at IGrow. Our team conducts proper market research and assesses the risks of properties we have on our books. We also support property portfolio diversification and tenant management and insurance, and provide rental assist packages to take the potential stress out of property investment.
Our property investment specialist team will help make your finances work for you over time, as your property appreciates in value. To boost your overall financial stability and security, our Chartered Accountants, Trust attorneys, and legal partners at LK Attorneys will ensure your income-generating assets are protected from excessive taxes or from creditors if anything goes wrong in your life.
3. Love and Belonging: Friendship, Family, Sense of Connection, Intimacy
A home isn’t just a place to live, it’s where you sculpt your family life and build a sense of belonging in a community. IGrow developments often have green spaces, communal braai areas, or swimming pools, and clubhouses, as well as kids’ play areas and even creches. In these play areas, you can build your family bonds and also make friends with other people in the community. This fostering of community, friendship, and connection will help fulfil this important tier of needs in your tenants, making these developments great long-term investments. Tenants will form strong bonds with friends when they live within a community setup and have a safe and secure home.
Investors find a sense of belonging in the IGrow investor community. Through our webinars, newsletters and support and guidance from the IGrow team, you join a group of like-minded people. Each of you is working towards financial security and financial freedom.
IGrow Wealth Investments isn’t just a service provider; we offer an entire support system and network, with expertise at your fingertips to help build your financial freedom. We also help you strengthen your family or community through trusts so you can leave a legacy to your loved ones or a treasured community cause.
4. Esteem: Respect, Self-Esteem, Status, Recognition, Strength, Freedom
“Maslow classified esteem needs into two categories: (i) esteem for oneself (dignity, achievement, mastery, independence) and (ii) the desire for reputation or respect from others (e.g., status, prestige)”. (Source).
“Esteem is the typical human desire to be accepted and valued by others. People often engage in a profession or hobby to gain recognition, which gives them a sense of contribution or value.” (Source).
Being a homeowner and investor builds your self-worth. Your tenants will be living in well-looked-after IGrow properties, especially with our tenant management and property management team on hand. Tenants experience good self-esteem because their homes are well-maintained by IGrow’s rental management team, and they can feel house-proud.
Investors feel more recognition from peers and loved ones with each successful property purchase. It boosts their self-esteem and sense of personal freedom to have rental income, a property portfolio and growing equity as property assets increase in value and give them more leveraging power. IGrow clients often feel a surge in inner strength and empowerment after each of their property investment purchases as they move towards financial freedom and real wealth. They then gain respect from their family members and friends and earn self-respect.
They know that they will leave a legacy long after they have gone. This can also raise the esteem in which our investors are held.
5. Self-Actualisation: Desire to Become the Best That You Can Be
Maslow was very interested in the character traits of people whom he considered to have reached their highest potential as individuals. (Source).
He studied prominent people (including Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein) who he considered to have reached the self-actualisation level, and discovered tell-tale signs of self-actualised individuals. (Source).
The 15 characteristics of a self-actualised person:
- They perceive reality efficiently and can tolerate uncertainty
- Accept themselves and others for what they are
- Spontaneous in thought and action
- Problem-centered (not self-centered)
- Unusual sense of humor
- Able to look at life objectively
- Highly creative
- Resistant to [“upbringing”], but not purposely unconventional
- Concerned for the welfare of humanity
- Capable of deep appreciation of basic life experience
- Establish deep, satisfying interpersonal relationships with a few people
- Experience peak experiences
- Need for privacy
- Democratic attitudes
- Strong moral/ethical standards (Source).
Maslow believed it is not necessary to embody all 15 characteristics to become self-actualised. People who don’t appear completely self-actualised will also have some of these traits. (Source).
“Maslow did not equate self-actualization with perfection. Self-actualisation merely involves achieving one’s potential” (Source).
IGrow’s rental properties meet some self-actualisation needs
On the top of the pyramid lies the desire to create meaning, foster creativity, and pursue your purpose. On the tenants’ front, having a safe home gives them room to expand on their dreams and goals, be creative, and grow overall. Examples are seen where tenants start a family, launch a business or side hustle, or engage in further education to reach their full potential.
On the investor’s front, financial freedom through property investment opens a window to living the life you truly desire! With a well-structured portfolio plan in place and support from the IGrow team, many of our clients make major transformations in their lives. They move from salaried 9 am – 5 pm employment under a boss to entrepreneurship or early retirement with financial freedom. They build their own legacies through property portfolios they can leave to their loved ones.
When the lower basic needs are met, you have room to become the best version of yourself that you can be. You can even help your friends and family become the best they can be, too!
