Here we review the top ‘pioneer golf estates’ in the country. All these estates were built over 15 years ago.
Ratings criteria for these golf estates include quality and design of houses, exclusivity, average stand size and placing/spacing of houses, scenery and wildlife, facilities including spa, bars, parks, shops and restaurants, security as well as golf course quality and rating.
Fancourt tops the list. It is the undoubtedly one of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations, with 3 of the top 20 courses in the country on one estate.
The two original courses (the Montagu and the Outeniqua) were built in the early 90s, while the world famous Fancourt Links was added in 2000.
The estate is a haven for traveling golfers and many stay at the Fancourt Hotel & Spa and the Manor House.
There are several different residential areas on the estate including Links Ridge, Links Avenue, Cape Dutch Village, Oakland’s Village and Montagu Ridge.
Unlike traditional estates, the houses at Erinvale vary considerably from one another in terms of design, size and color.
Milnerton Golf Course is one of only a handful of South African courses that is located right next to the beach. It was built in the early 1900s, but it was not until 1995 that houses were built on the property in the form of the Sunset Links Estate, hence the name.
The estate has since become one of best locations on the West Coast.
It is located in a convenient location for working professionals (less than 15 minutes from central Cape Town) and the natural wetland that surrounds the estate is home to over 100 species of birds, including the malachite and pied kingfisher.
Interestingly, Sunset Links was recently rated as the best suburb in South Africa to live in, read more here.
Originally a vineyard owned by the Louw family, Steenberg was re-developed by JCI in 1990 to include a golf course, hotel, spa and housing estate.
The estate still contains a large winery and vineyard to this day, making it unique from other estates in the South Africa. There are relatively few houses at Steenberg, when one considers the size of the estate. The newly built ‘Nieuwe Steenberg’ is the latest development there.
Built on the banks of Hartbeespoort Dam, Pecanwood Golf Course was completed in 1998.
The name was inspired by the grove of pecan nut trees on the property. It was the first Jack Nicklaus designed course in the country – Nicklaus has since designed Pearl Valley, Serengeti,Simola and St Francis Links. There are still a number of plots available on the estate and over 1 000 houses already built.
Built in 1992, Dainfern is one of the best known golf estates in the country. It is also one of the largest, with over 1 200 relatively large stands on the estate.
Dainfern is located next to the soon to be built Steyn City. Like Erinvale, the houses at Dainfern vary considerably from one another. – Andrew Amoils
